Uwajima Ushioni Festival

和霊大祭うわじま牛鬼まつり
The Uwajima Ushioni Festival is a vibrant summer celebration held at the Warei Shrine, in honor of Yanbei Seibei, a prominent figure in the history of the Uwajima Domain. Dating back to 1653, the festival was established by Date Hidemune, the first lord of the Uwajima domain, who constructed Yamayori Wareisha and initiated a grand festival on June 24th.

Taking place in late July, the "Uwajima Ushioni Festival" spans three exciting days, kicking off with the lively Gaiya Carnival. The festival showcases a captivating parade featuring numerous Ushioni, which are impressive 5-6 meter long parade floats adorned with an ogre-like face, a long neck, a cow body covered with red cloth or shuro, and a tail resembling a sword. Attendees can also enjoy the traditional Uwajima Odori dance, a spectacular fireworks display, and experience the thrilling "hashiri-komi" parade of giant floats and Mikoshi (sacred portable shrines) along the Suka River, passing by the Warei Shrine, accompanied by a stunning fireworks display on the final day of the festival.
