The Saijō Festival is a religious event to give thanks to the gods for a bountiful harvest and is the collective name for the annual festivals of four local shrines (Kabo Shrine Festival, Iwaoka Shrine Festival, Isono Shrine Festival, and Iizumi Shrine Festival). It is a traditional autumn festival in Saijō City, Ehime Prefecture, that has been held since the Edo period.
Hundreds of portable festival floats (danjiri, mikoshi, and taikodai) gather from all over the city, and the number of floats is said to be the largest in Japan. During the festival period, schools and companies take a break all at once, and many people from outside the city also visit, making it a deeply rooted local festival.
◆ Kabo Shrine Festival: October 12–13 (dates vary each year; two days before and the day before Sports Day)
◆ Iwaoka Shrine Festival: October 14–15
◆ Isono Shrine Festival: October 15–16
◆ Iizumi Shrine Festival: October 16–17
