Learn the Importance of the Marine Environment! Accessory-Making Experience Using Marine Plastic

海の環境の大切さを学ぶ!海洋プラスチックを使ったアクセサリー作り体験
【Program Overview & Purpose】
In this program, participants create one-of-a-kind original accessories (key chains) using marine plastic waste. Each piece is unique—there are no two exactly alike in the world.

Marine debris, which has become a serious global issue, harms not only marine life but also human health.
It is said that approximately 70–80% of this waste originates from urban areas. Protecting the marine environment therefore requires everyone to become more aware and to change their daily actions.

The Cape Sada, home to the town of Ikata, is known as the longest and narrowest peninsula in Japan. Due to its geographical location between the Iyonada Sea and the Uwa Sea, large amounts of marine debris wash ashore along its coastline. While washed-up debris is visible on the beaches, it is believed that vast quantities of marine debris also lie on the seabed, and the issue of microplastics has become a growing concern.

The plastic pieces used in this program are marine plastic waste collected from the coastline of Ikata Town.
These materials are washed, sorted and cut. Preparing these plastic pieces requires a significant amount of time and effort, encouraging participants to rethink how they view waste.

By enjoying the process of making accessories while learning about the issues facing our oceans, this experience aims to spark interest and awareness of marine environment.

Through this hands-on experience, we hope participants will develop an interest in marine environmental issues and become more aware of them in their daily lives.
The program consists of a lecture and a crafting experience. If time permits, coastal observation, beach clean-up activities, and hands-on activities of collecting plastic waste used as raw materials for the accessories can also be arranged. Please feel free to contact for details.
The crafting experience is generally held at the Sadamisaki Hanto Museum, where both seas can be seen at the same time. Depending on venue availability, programs for more than 30 participants may be held at a different location. In such cases, please contact us regarding the venue and participation fee.
