Tosa Washi, produced in and around Tosa City and Ino Town, Kochi Prefecture, is thought to have a history of more than 1,000 years and is one of the best three traditional Japanese papers along with Echizen Washi from Fukui Prefecture and Mino Washi from Gifu Prefecture. It is said to have developed from being blessed with good quality water and raw materials, and boasts as many as 300 varieties and high quality. Characterized by its thinness and durability, the world's thinnest paper, Tosa Tengu-jo-shi, is only 0.03 mm, and is highly valued in a wide range of fields, from traditional uses such as wallets and paper lanterns to the restoration of books and paintings in the modern age. It can be said that Tosa's rich natural environment has nurtured this craft, and it is truly a product of nature. It is designated as a national traditional craft.
