Gloves, in Japanese "Tebukuro”, produced in Higashikagawa City (formerly Shirotori-cho), Kagawa Prefecture, account for approximately 90% of all glove production in Japan, and the city is known as the ”Glove Kingdom. Gloves produced in the region have a long history and tradition dating back to the Meiji Era (1868-1912), and are highly regarded both in Japan and abroad for their high quality. In particular, custom-made gloves for athletes are well known. In the region, there is a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the glove industry, a gallery where gloves are used as art, and a glove shrine, which shows how glove manufacturing is flourishing. 2014 saw the launch of the “Kagawa Gloves” brand, and the city is also focusing on making new gloves that combine tradition and innovation.
