Aizome (Awa indigo dyeing technique)

藍染め
Aizome in Tokushima Prefecture developed thanks to the fertile land in the Yoshino River basin and the encouragement of the Hachisuka clan, the first lord of the Tokushima domain in Awa* province.
In particular, high-quality indigo called ”Awa Ai” was produced and became known throughout the country. Aizome is characterized by its deepening of color with each dyeing cycle, its unique texture, and its insect repellent effect. Various shades of indigo can be produced, starting from a light indigo color called “kame-nozoki” to a deep indigo color called “katsu-iro". The indigo dyeing process is labor-intensive, but the resulting deep colors give people peace of mind. Indigo dyeing born in Tokushima is attracting attention from around the world as “Japan blue". There are also many hands-on facilities in the prefecture.
*Awa is the former name of Tokushima Prefecture.
