Museum blends into the rich nature of Mt. Yokogura
Mt. Yokogura, located in the town of Ochi in the center of Kochi Prefecture, is known as a treasure trove of precious flora and fauna. Located at the foot of the mountain, the Yokogurayama Natural Forest Museum is a natural history museum dedicated to the mountain.
Designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the building blends in with the rich nature of Mt. Yokogura, providing visitors with a peaceful and inspiring experience.
Inside the museum, visitors can learn about the diversity of nature at Mt. Yokogura, including Paleozoic fossils dating back 400 million years and a corner that recreates a “primeval forest of red gums. Also on display are representative fossils from around the world, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the earth and the evolution of life.
Mt. Yokogura is also known as the place where Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the “father of Japanese Botany” , visited many times throughout his life. There is a section introducing Dr. Makino's achievements and his thoughts on this mountain.
