A large shimpaku tree in the precincts of Hoshoin Temple, one of the 88 sacred places on Shodoshima. It is a nationally designated special natural monument and is said to be the largest shimpaku tree in Japan. It is said to have been planted by Emperor Ojin and is over 1,600 years old. With a trunk circumference of 16.9 metres, its majestic appearance evokes a sense of long history.
