【Program Overview & Purpose】
Naruto City is applying for UNESCO World Heritage status for several important sites, including the Naruto Whirlpools and the Shikoku Pilgrimage route. The city is also pursing UNESCO Memory of the World designation for Materials Related to the Bando POW Camp.
Peace Studies: A Little-Known Episode from World War I
In 1918, German prisoners of war at the Bando Prisoner-of-War Camp gave the first complete performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Asia. The performance reflected the humane leadership of camp director Toyohisa Matsue and the warm cross-cultural exchanges he fostered between German prisoners and the local community – exchanges that truly embodied the spirit of universal humanity celebrated in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Staff at The Naruto German House and local volunteer guides provide detailed explanations based on valuable original materials from World War I , offering visitors an opportunity to reflect on international peace and human rights in our increasingly globalized world.
Cultivating Sensitivity : Great Nature and World Art
The “whirlpools” of Naruto, created by swift currents and complex topography. Observe the whirlpools from the bridge deck of the Great Naruto Bridge, and learn about their mechanisms in depth at the adjacent memorial hall. The Otsuka Museum of Art is a unique ceramic plate museum housing Western masterpieces.
Hands-on Learning : Traditional Culture Experiences, Agriculture & Fishing Experiences
Through hands-on experiences like creating Otani ware pottery—a tradition dating back over 200 years to the late Edo period—and harvesting activities utilizing the natural resources of agriculture and fisheries-rich Naruto City, participants deepen their interest in food, agriculture, and fishing.
【Program Course】
Visitors can freely combine programs from three themes: Peace Studies, Cultivating Sensitivity, and Hands-on Learning.
Peace Studies: The Naruto German House (60 minutes), Bando Prisoner-of-War Camp Ruins and the German Soldiers’ Memorial, Nationally Designated Historic Site (30 minutes), German Bridge and Glasses Bridge, Kagawa Toyohiko Memorial Museum
Cultivating Sensitivity : Otsuka Museum of Art, Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, Onaruto Bridge Crossing Memorial Hall EDDY
Hands-on Learning: Otani ware pottery-making experience, Agricultural and fishing experience such as strawberry picking , Wakame processing
※Teaching materials and educational support including pre-study resources and DVDs are available for the Peace Studies program.

・Maximum number of participants: 240 (3 groups of 80)
