【Program Overview & Purpose】
This educational and hands-on program takes place at the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark Center, located along an open coastline with expansive ocean views. Through indoor lectures and practical activities on the beach, participants can experience and learn about the relationship between the marine environment and human life.
【Program Flow】
1. Learning About the Ocean (Indoor Session: 15 minutes): Participants will learn about the connection between the marine environment and our daily lives. What do the SDGs mean? Why is the ocean so important? Participants will also explore the impacts of microplastics on the marine environment.
2. Tide Pool Creature Observation (Outdoor Session: 1 hour): Participants will observe small marine creatures living in tide pools while learning from an instructor.
3. Visit to the Muroto Deep Sea Water Aqua Farm (Indoor Session: 1 hour): Participants will learn about the characteristics of Muroto’s deep sea water through tasting and simple experiments. Participants will also observe deep-sea creatures up close in a touch pool.
4. Beach Cleanup Challenge (Outdoor Session: 30 minutes): Participants will split into teams to collect trash along the beach and compete based on the total weight of the waste collected.
5. Microplastic Collection and Observation (Outdoor: 10 minutes / Indoor: 1 hour): Together with the instructor, participants collect sand samples from the beach and bring them indoors to observe microplastics under a microscope.
・Time required for the programme : 2-3.5 hours
・Time of year: Year-round (except mid-summer)

Recommendations
Through this hands-on program, participants will learn:
1. the connection between the ocean and human life,
2. the richness of marine life,
3. what we can do to protect the ocean,
4. the reality of marine debris and plastic pollution.
By taking part in the activities, participants are encouraged to see ocean environmental issues as something personally relevant.
Worksheets are also provided as part of the program, allowing participants to continue learning through follow-up or additional study after returning to school or home. The program content is supervised by earth science specialists, and the activities can be flexibly adjusted to meet the needs of schools or groups.
