Tradition Meets the SDGs! Sakiori Weaving Experience at "Oriko no Sato Cotton"

伝統工芸とSDGs!裂織り体験「オリコの里・コットン」
【Program Overview & Purpose】
The Sadamisaki Peninsula, where Ikata Town is located, was once known as an “isolated island” due to its extremely poor accessibility.
Under these harsh conditions, the people of the peninsula were forced to live a frugal lifestyle, valuing and reusing every possession with great care.
Sakiori (rag weaving) is a durable textile technique that allows precious fabric to be reused without waste.
It emerged from this way of life and is now recognized as an important piece of folk cultural heritage.
Today, efforts are being made to pass it on to future generations as a “treasure of the hometown.”
Sakiori is a weaving method in which worn-out cloth is finely torn into strips and used as weft threads, creating new fabric through weaving. As many different colors are woven together, the process offers the unique pleasure of watching the fabric transform into unexpected color patterns.
In Japan, sakiori has traditionally been practiced mainly in the Tohoku region and along the Sea of Japan coast. The fact that it spread only in this peninsula—known as an “isolated island”—and nowhere else in western Japan or Shikoku makes it an extremely valuable example.
Through this traditional weaving experience, participants can learn the importance of reuse and experience the spirit of the SDGs firsthand.
