The Shimanto River is Japan’s last clear water flow. Oku-Shimanto is the area from the river source to the upper-middle river basin, blessed with an abundant natural world of mountains, rivers, and the sea, and here you will find Oku Shimanto Hot Spring Town, made up of five hot spring inns.
This area offers an array of appealing hot springs, each with their own charms and different water qualities: Goroku Onsen, a hot spring direct from the spring source in the forest near the source of the Shimanto River; Kuroshio-Honjin, with an open air bath commanding stunning views of the Pacific Ocean; the historic YAWARAGI quietly standing in the mountains, where each room has an attached bath; Hotel Matsubakawa Onsen overlooking the Shimanto River, where you can enjoy two different good-quality water sources; and Kumo no Ueno Onsen at the base of the Shikoku Karst National Park, filled with the feeling of freedom of a town above the clouds (“kumo no ue”).
