Otaki Waterfall is located at the trailhead of Mt. Tebako (1806m), the highest mountain in Kochi Prefecture*.
It is a single large waterfall, but in winter the entire waterfall freezes over (usually from the end of December to the end of February), creating a spectacular ice fall.
In the early Edo period (1603-1867), an ice house was built in the mountain, and the ice was offered to the feudal lord.
*Mt. Ishizuchi is the highest mountain that straddles multiple prefectures in Shikoku and the highest peak in western Japan.
