Kinzan Shusseki-ji Temple

金山出石寺
Tranquil and Restful Precincts
The temple sits on the summit of Mt. Izushi and commands a panoramic view of the Shikoku mountain range, including Ishizuchi and Onogahara. Legend has it that in the early Nara period (710-794), when a hunter chased deer into the mountain, the earth rumbled and a rock split open, revealing the principal image of the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The temple is also home to a number of other highlights, including the "朝鮮鐘," a nationally designated important cultural property said to have been brought back by Takatora Todo during his invasion of Korea.

In addition, approximately 3,000 hydrangeas are planted along the approach to the temple.
Because of the high elevation, the blooming time is two weeks to six months later than in the plains, and the best time to view the flowers is from late June to mid-July, when they are in full bloom in a variety of colors including white, red, and purple.
