Honjima

本島
One of the seven islands of Shiokaku was active as the Shiokaku Suigun from the Middle Ages and gained autonomy during the Toyotomi regime. In the Edo period (1603-1867), a unique self-government system known as the ningyosei was implemented, with four elected officials as representatives, which continued until the Meiji Restoration. The island is known as a treasure trove of historical and cultural assets, including the Shiwaku Kushibanjo, where government affairs were conducted, Sensho-ji Temple, and the ruins of Kasajima Castle. Kasajima village, where the old townscape still remains, is a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, with narrow streets interlaced to enhance defenses, and retains many vestiges of its former home of the Shiozaku Suigun.

The area has been used as a filming location for several Japanese films such as, "Asashio Yuushio," "Son yo," "Kikansha Sensei," "Sekai no Chushin de Ai wo Sakebu," and "Koisuru INNOCENT MAN."
