Ashizuri Onsen

あしずり温泉
Famous hot springs with views of the magnificent Pacific Ocean and waters that relieved the fatigue of the Buddhist monk Kukai
Ashizuri Onsen is a hot spring town in Cape Ashizuri on the southernmost edge of Shikoku. It is said that Ashizuri Onsen was founded when Kukai, a famous Japanese monk also known by his title Kobo Daishi, found his fatigue was relieved by the hot spring waters flowing from a stream in a valley, and we can trace their use back around 1,200 years. These historic and famous natural springs boast good-quality hot-spring waters with radon, and are visited by many people as a hot spring cure to recover from fatigue and treat injuries. They are waters for all kinds of sicknesses, heightening people’s natural healing abilities and improving their immune systems.
Visit the stair-like Manjiro Ashiyu Footbath to find Hakusan-domon (natural arch), a prefectural natural monument, before your eyes. Beyond that lies the azure expanse of the Pacific Ocean. You can use the footbath free of charge, making it a perfect rest stop when visiting Cape Ashizuri.
On top of this, the Ashizuri Peninsula, surrounded by the sea on three sides, has the best spots for star gazing, with few lights. The breathtakingly beautiful starry sky is a spectacle you can’t experience in a city. Why not soothe your mind and body in the richly individual Ashizuri Onsen, with large public baths and open-air baths commanding views of the Pacific Ocean?
