In addition to its high iron content, Otani clay is also well known to have a faint metallic luster and a rough texture. In 2003, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry designated it as a traditional craft, and the Otani Pottery Market and Otani Pottery Festival are held every November in the precincts of Tōrin-in Temple. The pottery market used to be held in the precincts of Tōrin-in Temple. However, to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the market will be held at each kiln (November 12 and 13) again this year.
