Ootani Ware (Traditional large pottery made with a one-of-a-kind technique)

大谷焼
Ootani Ware, which originated in Ooasa-cho, Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, is a traditional potter's ware representing Tokushima Prefecture with a history of about 230 years. It is famous for making large items such as water jars and large bowls for Awa Aizome and other indigo dyeing. The pottery is made from iron-rich clay and is characterized by its subtle metallic luster and rustic, rough texture. The “Ne-rokuro” molding technique, named after a craftsman who would lie down and turn a potter's wheel with his feet when making a large jar, is also unique. In recent years, a wide range of products from daily necessities to works of art, such as tea bowls and teacups, have been produced, and they are gaining popularity as simple ceramics. It is designated as a national traditional craft.
