Awashima Island

粟島
The island consists of three connected islands with a sandbar resembling a screw. It has gained popularity in recent years as the location for the "Setouchi International Art Festival" and as a filming site for various movies and TV dramas, such as "Kikansha Sensei" (2004) and "Mystery, Not to Mention" (2022).

Historically, Awashima thrived as a port for Kitamae-bune, and in 1897, the National Awashima Seamen's School was established, producing many skilled individuals for the shipping industry. The memorial hall in Awashima Marine Memorial Park is an original establishment of the old school.

Visitors can climb to the Jyonoyama Observatory, where Awashima Castle once stood, to enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of the Seto Inland Sea, including the Seto-Ohashi Bridge and Hiuchinada Sea. Sea fireflies can be observed during the summer, while sand eels can be seen during rare boat trips from Suda Port to Awashima in autumn.

The Awashima Momote Festival, held annually on the first Sunday of March, is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the prefecture. Additionally, the "Awashima Furusato Gekidan" (Awashima Furusato Theatre Company), founded by the islanders, is active both on and off the island.

The island is also home to attractions such as Awashima Marine Memorial Park, Turtle Island, Kameebisu Shrine, Futen no Shu, Ise Shrine, Nishihama, Bonnonji Temple, Umihotaru, Daruma Kiln, Buibugiden, Awashima Shrine, Mashiro Hachimangu Shrine, Ashizuri Mountain, and 88 other points of interest. The Drifting Post Office is open only on the second and fourth Saturday and Sunday.
