〇 Dancers in unique costumes and with Naruko in their hands perform dynamic dances.
〇 About 200 teams and 18,000 dancers will create a whirlwind of excitement
〇 The spectacular performances will be staged at 17 stadiums and performance halls in Kochi City (*in 2024) over four days.
〇 The Yosakoi Festival is held in Kochi City for four days from August 9 to 12 every year.
  Dancers dressed in unique costumes dance around the city's various stadiums and performance halls while sounding Naruko (bells).
〇 Currently, there are approximately 200 participating teams, 18,000 dancers, and 17 performance halls (as of fiscal year 2024), and Yosakoi has spread from its birthplace in Kochi to all parts of Japan and to the world.

History and Origins

・The festival was first held in 1954, led by the Kochi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in an attempt to cheer up the citizens of Kochi by blowing away the winds of recession.
・Yosakoi” started with 750 participants in the first event, but has now developed into a festival that attracts attention not only from all over Japan, but also from around the world.

・Costumes, music, and choreography that are rich in individuality and free in their expression
・A wide range of music, from traditional to rock, enlivens the audience.
・The overwhelming performance of dynamic dancing and the powerful sound of ”Naruko※”.
※Naruko” is a percussion instrument used in Yosakoi. It is similar to castanets, but is shaken to make a sound.

Yosakoi dancing can be freely arranged as long as the following two rules are observed.
(1) Dancing forward while sounding Naruko.
(2) The phrase “Yosakoi Naruko Odori” must be included somewhere in the music.

Wide variety of costumes, music, and choreography]
Approximately 200 teams will participate in the festival.
The hairstyles and costumes are all unique, the music ranges from traditional to rock, and the choreography is varied.

Date & Time

・Eve Festival (August 9): Tosa Student Yosakoi Festival will be held.
・Main Festival (August 10 and 11): Heated competitions will be held at 17 performance sites (*in 2024).
・The National Yosakoi Tournament will be held on August 12.
The Yosakoi Festival is held over four days from August 9 to 12 every year: the eve festival(called Zenya-sai), the main festival (two days), and the last festival(called Koya-sai).
The eve of the festival is the “Tosa Student Yosakoi Festival,” which focuses on student teams (starting in 2019).
The last festival will feature the “Yosakoi National Tournament”.
